Faizabad Interchange to Get a Full Redesign

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has scrapped its earlier plan to widen the loops of Faizabad Interchange and will instead pursue a complete redesign and expansion of the entire interchange to address long-standing traffic congestion.

The decision came during a meeting on Friday chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa. The authority had recently invited bids for a Rs. 200 million project aimed at widening the loops of the 1990s-era interchange, which serves as the main gateway to Islamabad and a frequent site for protest gatherings.

Although bids were opened, the CDA chose not to issue a work order, concluding that loop widening would be only a temporary fix. “We want a permanent solution for the next three decades,” CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza said. “The chairman has directed us to design the entire project.”

Three consultant firms have been tasked with preparing a master plan, which will be presented to the interior minister once completed. Construction is expected to proceed in phases, following the approved design and available budget.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier directed the CDA to resolve daily traffic bottlenecks at the interchange, especially on the loop connecting Murree Road with the Islamabad Expressway.
