Heart attack or myocardial infarction is the death of heart muscles due to lack of blood supply. Like any other muscle in body heart muscles also need nourishment. The arteries that supply blood to the heart are called coronary arteries. Any blockage in these arteries or abnormal constriction of these arteries can affect blood flow to heart muscles. This is why people suffering from coronary artery disease are at an elevated risk of a heart attack. Fats, proteins, inflammatory cells, and calcium gather on the inside of coronary arteries and form a build up called plaque. Plaque deposits can be of variable size. These deposits being hard on the outside to tend to rupture a condition called plague rupture. Platelets gather to the area of a plaque rupture and cause the blood around the plaque to clot. This clot can partially or completely block the passage of blood through these arteries. Eventually, the heart muscle becomes deprived of oxygen and start to die the condition termed as a heart attack.
