This is a fully funded Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship pathway (Erasmus+), designed for international applicants who want a two-year, multi-university European degree in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation—the exact skills governments, climate projects, disaster-response teams, and sustainability-driven companies are hiring for worldwide.

This article explains what GEM is, what the Erasmus+ scholarship covers, who can apply, how to apply without confusion, and the exact deadlines you must follow for the September 2026 intake.

What the Erasmus Mundus GEM Scholarship Offers?

The Erasmus Mundus GEM Scholarship is not a partial fee discount—it’s a full support package designed to remove the biggest financial barriers that stop talented international students from studying in Europe. For selected GEM scholars, the Erasmus+ scholarship typically covers full tuition fees and includes full insurance, which means you’re not left scrambling to pay programme costs out of pocket.

Study abroad programs

On top of that, GEM Erasmus Mundus scholars usually receive a monthly living allowance of €1,400 for up to 24 months, helping you realistically manage rent, food, local transport, study materials, and the extra relocation expenses that come with moving between countries during a multi-university master’s. In real terms, this funding structure is built so you can focus on gaining career-ready geospatial and environmental modelling skills—rather than worrying about survival budgeting every semester.

Choose Your Track Like a Career Decision (Because It Is)

GEM offers four tracks, and each one is a different professional direction. The catch: once you start an application for one track, you can’t apply for another.

Track 1: Geospatial Planner
University of Tartu → University of Twente (ITC)

Track 2: Geospatial Analyst
University of Tartu → UCLouvain

Track 3: Geospatial Developer
Lund University → University of Twente (ITC)

Track 4: Geospatial Modeller
Lund University → UCLouvain

If you’re more policy + planning focused, you’ll naturally lean toward Planner/Analyst. If you want technical builds (tools, pipelines, applications), Developer is the obvious lane. If you like simulation, forecasting, and environmental modelling, Modeller is your track.

Who Can Apply for GEM Scholarship?

Use this as a quick checklist before you apply for the Erasmus Mundus GEM Scholarship:

  • Start with your degree: You should have a Bachelor’s (BSc or equivalent) in a relevant field like GIS, geography, environmental science, engineering, computer science, data/AI, planning, earth sciences, or remote sensing.
  • Check your academic strength: GEM is competitive, so your grades should show you can handle a demanding master’s programme.
  • Pick the right track for your profile: Choose the track that matches what you’ve studied or worked on—Planner, Analyst, Developer, or Modeller. The closer the match, the stronger your application looks.
  • Show proof of real skills: Your chances improve if you can demonstrate GIS/remote sensing experience, climate or environment-related coursework, coding and data skills (especially for Developer/Modeller), or research projects and internships.
  • Be ready for English proof: If you’re required to submit an English test, make sure it’s valid and uploaded before the deadline (many applicants use IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent test).
  • Follow the one-track rule: Apply to only one GEM track through the portal—once you start an application for a track, you can’t switch or apply to another.

The last date to apply for the Erasmus+ GEM Scholarship (available for all four GEM tracks) is 15 January 2026 at 23:59 CET.
