What is the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship?

Offered in collaboration with SOAS University of London, this scholarship program is specifically tailored to nurture talented individuals from Africa in fields crucial to sustainable development. With the broader mission of creating long-term impact across the continent, Hyundai Motor Group is investing in Africa’s next generation of changemakers.

The program provides access to academic excellence and a unique network of scholars, alumni, and Hyundai leaders, aimed at empowering students to tackle global challenges and drive development on the African continent.

Additionally, master’s students may apply for a Junior Internship Program launched at SOAS as part of the scholarship initiative.


Program Offerings

1# Number of Awards: 5 scholarships (4 for Master’s students, 1 for a PhD student)

2# Eligible Faculties:

  • College of Development, Economics and Finance
  • College of Law, Anthropology and Politics

3# Eligible Programs:

  • Any full-time (1 year) Master’s program starting in 2025/26
  • Any full-time PhD (MPhil/PhD) research program starting in 2025/26
    (Note: Part-time and 2-year Master’s programs are not eligible).

Scholarship Benefits

For master’s students, the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship covers full tuition fees, and any remaining amount from the total award of £27,730 is provided as a stipend to support living costs. PhD scholars will receive full tuition coverage for three years, plus the writing-up fee for the fourth year, along with an annual stipend of £22,780, paid in termly instalments.

In addition to financial support, scholars gain exclusive access to Hyundai-led networking events and seminars, opportunities for post-study alumni engagement, and the option to apply for a Junior Internship Program at SOAS.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be an African national and ordinarily resident in Africa
  • Must be a new international student (paying international fees) for the 2025/26 intake
  • Academic Excellence:
    • Master’s Applicants: Must hold or expect a first-class honours (or top-ranked equivalent). A 2:1 may be accepted but will not be prioritized.
    • PhD Applicants: Must hold or expect a Distinction-level Master’s degree (or top-ranked equivalent). Those with Merit may apply but will not be prioritized.
  • Applicants must:
    • Apply for admission at SOAS before applying for the scholarship
    • Meet English language requirements by the time the panel convenes
  • Have an unconditional offer by the time scholarship decisions are made.

Application Timeline

  • Application Deadline:
    All scholarship applications must be submitted by 12:00pm (midday), 25 April 2025 (UK local time)
  • Offer Requirement:
    Candidates must have an unconditional offer for their program when the scholarship panel meets (around June 2025).
  • Results Notification:
    Successful candidates will be contacted first in June. Others will be notified after all awards have been allocated.
