Northumbria University is proud to announce the 2025/26 Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarship, a crucial opportunity for students seeking asylum in the UK. This initiative offers three outstanding students a 100% tuition fee waiver for eligible Full-Time one-year Master’s courses starting in September 2025 at Northumbria University. Additionally, each successful applicant will receive a £3,000 financial award to support their studies and living costs.
Scholarship Benefits
- 100% Tuition Fee Waiver: Covers all tuition costs for an eligible full-time master’s program.
- £3,000 Financial Support: Paid in three installments 25% in November 2025, 25% in February 2026, 50% in May 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Sanctuary Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be currently seeking asylum in the UK or be a dependant, spouse, or civil partner of someone seeking asylum.
- Provide official evidence of immigration status.
- Have received a conditional or unconditional offer for a Full-Time one-year Master’s course at Northumbria University, starting in September 2025.
- Meet all the entry and English language requirements for their chosen course.
- Be living in the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, and North Cumbria) at the time of application.
- Be unable to access UK student finance (tuition fee loans or maintenance loans) due to immigration status.
Note: Spouses or civil partners must have been legally recognized at the time of the asylum application. Dependent children must have been under 18 years old when the asylum application was made.
Selection Process

- Shortlisting: A panel will assess applications and select candidates for interviews.
- Interview Process: Shortlisted candidates will attend an interview in Newcastle Upon Tyne and provide immigration status documents.
- Final Selection: The interview panel will choose the recipients, and successful applicants will be notified by June 2025.
